Youth board members of Green Cambridge are 16-25 years old and have attended at least one board meeting as a visitor. Once elected by the board, they attend all board meetings of the organization and while they cannot vote on legally binding topics, they add to the discussion and help problem solve. The role is educational in that youth board members participate in the decision-making process of a non-profit organization.
Additionally, the views and opinions of the youth board members provide new ideas and initiatives to the organization. While serving, a youth board member may become the assistant to one of the officers of the organization (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer) and assist them while digging more deeply into the specifics of what makes an organization run. As a whole, becoming a youth board member is a way to learn about the inner workings of an organization while helping it complete its mission.
