Cambridge residents can obtain a parking permit for $25/year. In 2011, in response to our advocacy, the price was raised from $8 to $20, with a built in raise in 2013 to the current rate of $25 per annum. As can be seen from the graph above, however, the number of parking permits issued has been declining for over 10 years, despite an increase in the population. All the fees collected are to be spent, by city ordinance, on vehicle miles traveled and parking reduction programs, including the promotion of bicycling, walking, and public transit. Anyone can make additional contributions beyond the required $25, which will also be spent on these matters. Because the number of permits is declining, without raising the fees again, the city's budget for these programs will also decline. For this reason, Green Cambridge is advocating for a gradual increase of the annual parking permit fee to maintain and increase the city's budget for traffic mitigation, including reduction of our GHG emissions from transportation.
